UNDP – GEF-SGP
Kwetu received funding from UNDP at the beginning of 2009 for duration of 18 months to implement a project titled: Enhancing the coastal Community participation in conservation and sustainable use of mangrove forest through silviculture innovations.
Aim
The project aims at a holistic approach of addressing mangrove deforestation through capacity building to the fisher community on sustainable use of mangroves through alternative livelihoods like silviculture along the Kenyan coast. This will be achieved through environmental educational activity, experiential learning, participatory research and livelihood empowerment initiatives at the same time con serving the environment.
Objectives
To promote and establish silviculture technologies in Kilifi and Kwale districts.
Diversifying livelihoods options of local communities and fishermen dependant on the mangrove wetlands for their subsistence.
Upgrading Kwetu as a centre of excellence for silviculture technologies.
Advocating for the conservation and sustainable use of mangrove wetlands in coastal communities.

ReCoMaP (Regional Programme for the Sustainable Management of the Coastal Management of the Coastal Zones of the Indian Ocean Countries)
Kwetu received funding from ReCoMaP support a project titled: A sustainable Management of mangrove ecosystems through small scale mariculture as an alternative livelihood for coastal communities in Kenyafor the duration of two years.
Specific Objective
The project aims at improving the potential for small scale community based low intensity mariculture technologies as an alternative livelihood option for the artisanal fisher communities.
By empowering the local communities, they can play a dual role of increasing their quality of life and be active stewards of the environment on which they depend on by advocating against destructive practices that increase the vulnerability of mangrove ecosystems.
Five community groups have been supported to start up mariculture initiatives at their sites. These are Mida’s Dabaso Conservation group and Nkunazini Fishers group in Malindi, Majaoni Youth development group in Mombasa district,Abent youth Conservation youth group and Makongeni’s Baraka Conservation group in Kwale district. Two groups will be identified and supported in the second year of the project.

Toyota Environmental Activities
Toyota environmental funded Kwetu in 2007 to support a project on “Community Based Mariculture and Mangrove management in Kenya”.
Goal
The project aims to reduce the vulnerability of mangrove cutting as a result of extreme poverty by generating direct income opportunities from the mangrove and other complimentary natural resources thereby improving the living standards of resource users.
Objectives
To improve on the quality of life communities dependant on the mangrove wetlands by initiating and extending to them the silvofisheries technologies and other income diversification activities.
To continuously refine and develop silvofisheries technologies on high valued marine species (fish, crabs and prawns) that are low cost and effective, and serve as a training centre in the capacitating the local communities regularly.
To contribute to the rehabilitation and reduce vulnerability of the mangrove wetlands.
