East coast of Africa and especially the Kenyan coast has been endowed with a lot of riches especially, the natural resources which have been the economic back bone of the coastal communities. Tourism sector thrives well in the region and this becomes the main economic activity at the Coast. Contrary to the picture that comes to mind about the lives of the people that reside at the east coast of Kenya there are two problems that have not been addressed and that have left the communities grappling in poverty and low lives.
These two problems are:
Food insecurity- where many local families can’t afford to put at least three meals in a day. The problem comes about because of ancient ways of agriculture which have left the land to be infertile, lack of adequate knowledge on the best farm practices, wastage of land- where large tracks of land that are not being used appropriately.
The economy – many coastal communities lead low lives, some under extreme poverty.
Goal of the department:
The department deals with sustainable food production (plant farming and animal husbandry) with a quest to improve people’s health, adding to their livelihood option and conserving their environment.
What we do at the moment:
Organic farming- at three community groups and there is a demo- farm at Kwetu particularly on hardy crops and vegetables.
Rabbit breeding and keeping- at four community groups and five schools around Kilifi County and also we have a demo- hutch for breeding.
Poultry keeping- done within Kilifi County in five schools.
Comparative study of doing cassava farming within one community group in Kilifi County.
Comparative food production (conventional and organic) within Kwale County at Mackinon centre.
This department trains on bio-intensive farming approach involving both agriculture philosophy and farm management which helps in improving soil fertility; links up with local government and research stations to facilitate technology transfer to farmers.
